Wet Vlei

Day 10 and 11; Monday March 7th and Thuesday March 8th

We waited at about quarter to seven at the entrace gate of the park for visiting Sossusvlei. The Gouvernment allows the people which stay overnight in the national camps to enter the park at six o clock in the morning. We booked in a private lodge and had to wait until seven. That’s how to make money in Namibia. But that was not the badest option. All the guys who stressed at six in the morning those 60 Kilometers and the 4x4 track to the vlei, missed the wonderful morning light at the first kilometers of the road. As the grass was so green and there where also some Springboks and Oryx present, I could take some awesome pictures which I never got in the early morning rush hour to the vlei. We also met a Swiss couple with a four wheel drive at the gate. They offered us to take us with their car to the vlei. So we’ve got our private taxi drive and plus a new friendship. We walked to the Death Vlei and took some stunning pictures of the Akacia trees there. After that we also visited the Sossusvlei itself, but we weren’t so impressed of. The fascinating thing was that there was water, water in the desert. But the landscape was more impressive for us at the beginning of the park and in the death vlei. We took some pictures and left the park. Later at the afternoon, Bridget and I drove to the Dune 45 and climbed up a little bit. That Dune is positioned at Kilometer 45 and maybe 200 meters in height. After climbing the half, I had enough. That was so strenous! You always do one step ahead and two back. It’s the pure experience of the principal of Sissifus. Also the drive back gave us a lot of photo opportunities. The dunes in that late evening light became those deep red colours and in the far haze they even got those tabacco colours. Fantastic! All in all it was a wonderful day which make us to remeber for ever about that highlight of our trip.
