Streetfight

Day 8 and 9; Saturday and Sunday March 5th and 6th

It was incredible wet, Namibia. WE spoke to the people who live there for lifetime and the told us that during the last years they had rain, but for that much they have to remember back to their childhood. About 30 years there was not that much rain in Namibia. The mean for a year is about 110mm. That mean has been topped in January and February each month. Almost 300mm rain came down this year and the rain season is not over yet. The streets where wet and it was not so easy to travel ahead. Streets were unpassable for some days. But we lerned to ask the people for the road conditions and that way we could drive without a bad feeling in our stomach.

The day after our C12 odysee we took the same road, but to the opposite direction. Ther the road was in excellent contition and step for step I startet to belive more into the best gravel roads of the world. From Grunau we had a tarred road and come trough fast to Keetmanshoop, Mariental and Maltahohe. At the Hotel Maltahohe we meet Chris, the barman and man for everything else. He is a real Capetonian. Very nice and friandly and always in a good mood. He did some phone calls to figure out the best was to Sesriem for us and told us that we have to do a 80km detour, but the road conditions are fine then.So we found an almost freshly graded C14 and C19 to Solitaire and further to Sesriem. It was hard to belive that the C14 was flooded for wider parts just a month before. The road was still a little bit muddy sometimes, but we didn’t had to much problems. It was likeley driveing on snow which we are use to as Swiss guys. On the C19 we had to cross a river which was also not a problem. The water just reachet over my feet and the ground was stabilized with concrete plates. A few minutes later we meet the Belgians again which we met at the Canon Roadhouse. They told us that just yesterday the Water had a height from about 1 Meter and most of the Cars, even 4x4, didn’t had a chance to get through. We went to their lodge for a cool beer and didcussed over the small world, the wet Namibia an what for lucky people we all are to have the chance seeing something like that.
